Core Job Roles Explained

You can apply for three main roles under this hiring cycle.

Branch Postmaster (BPM): You will manage a small Branch Post Office all by yourself. Your duties include daily mail work, handling India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) money, and telling people about government plans. You need to find and pay for your accommodation for the office setup and reside in the post village.
Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM): You will support the main branch office by managing stamps and stationery sales, organizing door-to-door mail delivery, and assisting with IPPB transactions. You must live within the delivery area of your designated post office.
Dak Sevak: You will work at Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices, Transit Mail Offices, or Delivery Centres. Your duties include sorting letters, packing and moving heavy mail bags, selling stamps, and helping the Postmaster when needed. You must live within the delivery area of the concerned post office.

It includes the specific number of jobs reserved for OBC, ST, SC, and EWS (10%), as well as the seats for the General Category (UR) and People with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD at 1% for each sub-category.

India Post GDS Recruitment 2026: Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the BPM, ABPM, or Dak Sevak positions, you must meet the basic educational, language, and age requirements set by the department.

Qualification: You must have passed Class 10 from a recognized Central or State education board. Passing marks in Mathematics and English are compulsory. You cannot apply if you got a similar qualification from any other school board.
Local Language Rule: You must have studied the official regional language of your applied postal circle as a compulsory or elective subject at least up to the 10th standard. However, there are special, relaxed rules for applicants from Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim, and Nagaland.
Essential Skills: You must know how to ride a bicycle and have basic computer operations knowledge. Applicants must give a written declaration stating they have another job or business to earn a living.
Experience Rule: Prior work history or past service experience of any kind will not give you extra points, as it will not be considered during selection.

India Post GDS Recruitment 2026: Salary Details (TRCA)

GDS workers are not regular government employees, and so they get a monthly allowance (TRCA) instead of a fixed salary. This allowance increases by 3% every year based on their good performance and meeting the required job conditions. You also get a DA bonus whenever the government updates it. Even though GDS workers are not regular employees, they still get retirement benefits. When they leave or retire from the job, they receive a one-time Gratuity payment. They also get enrolled in the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme, which works like the National Pension System (NPS).

India Post GDS Recruitment 2026: Age Limit & Relaxations

Candidates applying must note that their age will be calculated as of the closing date of application submissions.

Base Age Limit: Minimum 18 years and maximum 40 years.
SC / ST Candidates: 5 years’ upper-age relaxation available (up to 45 years).
OBC Candidates: 3 years’ upper age relaxation available (up to 43 years).
PwBD Candidates: 10 years’ upper age relaxation available (up to 50 years).
PwBD + OBC Candidates: 13 years’ upper age relaxation available (up to 53 years).
PwBD + SC / ST Candidates: 15 years’ upper age relaxation available (up to 55 years).
EWS Candidates: No age relaxation is applicable.

Application Fee Details

General / OBC Candidates: A fee of INR 100 must be paid online via Credit Card, Debit Card, Net Banking, or UPI. This fee is non-refundable.

Fee-Exempted Categories: All female applicants, SC/ST candidates, PwBD applicants, and Transwomen are completely exempt from paying any fees.

What Is the Selection Process?

The selection process does not require you to take an exam or attend interviews. Here is how it works:

Applicants are selected based on a computer-generated merit list. No manual selection or interviews are involved in this process.
The merit list will be prepared using your total 10th marks, calculated as a percentage up to 4 decimal places.
If your board gave you grades or CGPA, your score will first be converted into marks. Your score will be converted by multiplying the grade point by a factor of 9.5. (A1 grade pr 10 point score becomes 95%).
You must enter your scores exactly as they appear on your marksheet. Mixing up marks and grades, or entering the wrong format, will result in your application being canceled and disqualified.
If two applicants get the exact same merit score, the system ranks them based on age (older candidates get priority). If a tie still remains, selection follows a strict priority order of category and gender combinations (starting with ST trans-woman, ST female, SC trans-woman, SC female, and so on).
Shortlisted candidates must pass physical document verification by their local division head. After that, you will get a temporary job offer, complete 3 days of basic training, arrange your accommodation, and get final approval once your background check is clear.

How to Apply for India Post GDS Recruitment 2026

You can complete the application process through the official portal. You must complete your submission in two stages: OTR and the Online Application Form.

Step 1: First, visit the official website: indiapostgdsonline.gov.in.

Step 2: Open the One-Time Registration (OTR) link. Fill in your valid mobile number, email ID, and 10th board name, and basic personal details to get a unique Registration Number.

Step 3: Use the Registration Number and password sent to your mobile phone via SMS to log in. Click the “Apply Online” link under the Active Notification tab.

Step 4: Enter your personal details, select your school board, and choose your preferred post office locations.

Step 5: Then, you have to upload your passport photo (30-100 KB) and signature (20-100 KB) in the exact size mentioned. Make sure the photograph and signature image are uploaded in the right format.

Step 6: Check your application preview and correct any mistakes before submitting.

Step 7: Pay the application fee online within 10 minutes of starting the payment window. You can use Net Banking, Credit/Debit cards, or UPI for fee payment. You can skip this step if you belong to a fee-exempted category.

Step 8: Submit the form before the deadline, or use the correction window on 23-24 September 2026 if you need to fix errors. Make sure you keep a printout of the confirmation page for your records.

India Post GDS Recruitment 2026: Mandatory Instructions

Single Account Rule: You can register only one time on the portal. If you create duplicate or multiple profiles, your application will be immediately cancelled.
Document Upload Clause: You do not need to upload any educational or category certificates during the online submission phase. The portal only requires your photo and signature. All certificates will be checked during the document verification stage later.
Name Matching Rule: Your Name, DOB, and Parents’ names must exactly match your 10th marksheet. Even minor spelling errors can cause your application to be canceled.
Contact Details Lock: Kindly note that you can’t change your mobile number and email ID linked to your account at any stage under any circumstances. So, make sure you only provide an active number and ID to receive important updates.
Barred Applicants: Candidates who were previously fired or removed from any government job or GDS service can’t apply. If you make a false statement regarding past employment, it will lead to immediate termination and legal action.
DigiLocker Verification: Selected candidates must permit verification of their 10th marksheet online through DigiLocker. All candidates must provide formal consent for this verification.
No Politicians: Anyone holding a public elected office (like local political leaders) will not be considered for the job.

Beware of Fraud: The Post Department never calls applicants on the phone. Do not share personal details with fake callers.
