The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is hiring for 1,748 Junior Engineer and Scientific Assistant positions. The commission has released the notification to hire qualified candidates for JE roles in engineering fields like Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Telecom. You can apply for these roles online till September 22, 2026, up to 11 PM. Selected candidates will get jobs in different central government offices, ministries, and departments all over India.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility Criteria Details 

To apply for the SSC JE Exam, candidates must meet some conditions. Different departments have different rules, so you must check the specific department’s requirements before applying. Kindly note that degrees or diplomas obtained through distance learning or online modes are usually not accepted unless they have specific UGC approval. 

Nationality & Citizenship

A candidate must be one of the following:

  • A citizen of India
  • A subject of Nepal or Bhutan
  • A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or specified East African countries with the clear intention of permanently settling in India. But they need to provide an eligibility certificate from the Government of India.
SSC JE Qualification

It is very important to note that educational qualifications differ by organization and post. 

JE (Civil): 
  • You need an engineering degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university/institute. 
  • Candidates with a 3-year diploma in Civil Engineering with relevant work experience (requirements vary by organization) can also apply.
JE (Electrical) / JE (Mechanical) / JE (Electrical & Mechanical)
  • You need a degree or diploma in the relevant Electrical/Mechanical/Automobile engineering fields from a recognized university or institute.
  • Relevant work experience is required in some organizations.
JE (Telecom)
  • Candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology in Electrical, Electronics, Electrical Communications, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Information Technology, or Instrumentation can apply. 
Scientific Assistant (IMD)
  • You can apply if you hold a Bachelor’s degree in Science (B.Sc.) with Physics as one of the core subjects.
  • Candidates having a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications (BCA), Information Technology, Electronics & Telecommunication, Electronics & Communication, or Instrumentation can also apply.
What Is the Age Limit?

Candidates applying for different roles under SSC JE recruitment must check details on age limits before applying. 

  1. Cut-off Date: Your exact age will be calculated as of August 1, 2026.
  2. 30-Year Limit Posts: General and EWS candidates must be born between August 2, 1996, and August 1, 2008.
  3. 32-Year Limit Posts: General and EWS candidates must be born between August 2, 1994, and August 1, 2008.

Age Relaxation Rules

  • SC / ST Candidates: Receive a fixed 5-year relaxation beyond the upper age limit.
  • OBC Candidates: Receive a fixed 3-year relaxation beyond the upper age limit.
  • PwBD Candidates: Unreserved/EWS disability candidates get 10 years, OBC gets 13 years, and SC/ST gets 15 years of relaxation.
  • Ex-Servicemen (ESM): Receive a 3-year relaxation after deducting their actual military service from their current age.
  • Disabled Defence Personnel: Personnel disabled during operational conflicts get 3 years (General/EWSS/OBC) or 8 years (SC/ST).
What Is the Application Fee?
  • Male Candidates: Male applicants from General, OBC, and EWS categories must pay an application fee of INR 100.
  • Fee Exemptions: All female candidates, SC, ST, PwBD, and Ex-Servicemen applicants do not need to pay the application fee.

Note: The online payment gateway stays active until September 23, 2026, at 11:00 PM. Once you pay the fee, the money will not be refunded or adjusted for other tests. Applications submitted without fee (where applicable) will face immediate rejection. 

Salary and Post Classification

  • Job Classification: Selected candidates are appointed to central government Group ‘B’ posts.
  • Pay Level: These junior engineer positions fall under Pay Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission matrix.
  • Pay Scale: The initial basic salary ranges between INR 35,400 and INR 1,12,400 per month.
  • Extra Allowances: Additional benefits like Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Transport Allowance (TA) are also included in the in-hand salary. 
What Is the Selection Process?
  • Paper-I Exam: Computer-based test that is qualifying in nature.
  • Paper-I Marks: Covers 50 reasoning marks, 50 general awareness marks, and 100 marks.
  • Paper-I Time: Total exam duration is 2 hours.
  • Paper-I Penalty: Negative marking of 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer.
  • Paper-II Exam: Computer-based test for candidates shortlisted from Paper-I.
  • Paper-II Marks: Deep technical engineering paper worth 300 marks.
  • Paper-II Time: Total exam duration is 2 hours.
  • Paper-II Penalty: Negative marking of 1 mark for each incorrect answer.
  • Document Verification: Departments check original educational, category, and age certificates.
  • Medical Review: Physical standards and medical tests required specifically for BRO posts.
  • Exam Language: Both objective-type question papers are available in Hindi and English.
  • Merit Split: Separate final merit lists are prepared for each engineering stream.
How to Apply?

Candidates must apply early to avoid heavy server traffic near the deadline date. The commission will not take responsibility for website failure due to late applications. 

  • First, complete your OTR profile on ssc.gov.in.
  • Don’t use old profiles from ssc.nic.in as they are invalid.
  • Next, log in to the web portal or the mySSC mobile app.
  • Then, enter your personal and academic details accurately.
  • Upload your recent photograph and scanned signature.
  • Opt for Aadhaar verification to avoid formatting rejections.
  • Select your preferred department, post, and subject stream carefully.
  • Next, pay your application fee online using UPI, net banking, or cards.
  • Review all fields before submitting the form, and print your copy.
Key Points to Note
  • You must check requirements by different organizations before applying; some departments demand extra experience with a diploma, while others don’t.
  • Application fees, once paid, will not be refunded under any situation.
  • Applications submitted with an incomplete or unpaid fee status will face immediate rejection.
  • The last date to submit the online fee is September 23, 2026, and it can be paid through digital channels, including BHIM UPI, Net Banking, or major debit and credit cards.
  • Candidates must hold a regular Engineering Degree or a 3-year Diploma in a relevant technical field matching the post requirements.
  • Those applying for the IMD Scientific Assistant post must hold a relevant graduate Bachelor’s Degree in Science fields.
  • Age relaxation benefits are not available to the sons, daughters, or dependents of Ex-Servicemen.
