What are the eligibility requirements?
Essential Medical Qualifications
- Medical Registration: Applicants must hold a primary medical degree (like an MBBS).
- Postgraduate Degree: Applicants must have completed advanced training and have a recognized postgraduate degree (such as an MD or MS) in their specific field of medicine.
- Specialty Requirement (General Surgery): You need a Master of Surgery (M.S.) in General Surgery. Equivalent degrees from other countries, such as a medical degree from the U.S. (the Specialty Board of Surgery).
Required Teaching Experience
Applicants with at least 3 years of teaching experience as a Lecturer, Registrar, Demonstrator, or Resident can apply.
They must show proof of experience in their specific medical specialty after completing the postgraduate degree.
Desirable Qualification
- Himachal Knowledge: Candidates who know the local languages, traditions, and culture of Himachal will be given preference.
- Research Work: It is also a benefit if you have your research studies published in recognized medical journals.
Age Limit
- Applicants must be 45 or younger as of January 1, 2026. Those who belong to certain reserved or special groups can get age relaxation benefits.
- Candidates from SC, OBC, PwD, Children or Grandchildren of Freedom Fighters will get a 5-year age relaxation.

Selection Process and Exam Pattern
The selection process includes a written exam followed by an interview (Personality Test).
- Exam Mode: The screening test can be a Computer-Based Test (CBT) or an offline exam, while the final interview is held at the HPPSC office in Shimla.
- Paper I (Screening Test): A 1-hour objective exam for 100 marks covering HP General Knowledge (30 marks), National/International Affairs (30 marks), Hindi Language (20 marks), and English Language (20 marks).
- Paper II (Subject Test): A 3-hour descriptive Subject Aptitude Test for 120 marks based on the official specialty syllabus.
- Negative Marking: Objective questions carry a 0.25-mark penalty for wrong answers or for leaving a question blank without marking “Option E”.
- Document Verification: The commission will review all online forms and uploaded certificates before moving candidates to the interview stage.
- Personality Test: An interview carrying 30 marks, requiring a minimum passing score of 12 marks for the general category and 9 marks for reserved categories.
- Final Merit List: The final rank list is prepared by combining your scores from Paper II (Subject Test) and the Personality Test.
